How to Take Care of a Terrarium in Hot Weather
Danny PhamShare
Summer heat can be tough on terrariums if they aren’t cared for properly. High temperatures can cause overheating, excess moisture, and plant stress. With a few smart adjustments, your terrarium can stay healthy even during the hottest months.
Keep Your Terrarium Out of Direct Sun
Glass terrariums act like mini greenhouses. Direct sunlight can quickly raise the temperature inside and burn plants. Place your terrarium in bright but indirect light, or use LED grow lights instead of window sun.
Control Temperature and Airflow
Good airflow is essential in hot weather.
- Open closed terrariums for a short time each day
- Keep the terrarium in a well-ventilated room
- Avoid placing it near windows, heaters, or electronics
- Ideal temperatures are usually between 18–27°C (65–80°F).
Watch Water Levels
Heat increases evaporation. Check moisture often, but don’t overwater.
- If glass looks foggy all day, there’s too much moisture
- If soil looks dry, lightly mist with water
Use distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral buildup.
